The Death of Vanity Metrics: Why African Brands Need a New Influencer Marketing Playbook

By David Boon

Here’s a statistic that should make every marketer rethink their influencer marketing.

Imagine paying an influencer with 100,000 followers to create content for your brand.

Most marketers assume that content will reach 100,000 people.

It won't.

In reality, Modash reports that the average organic feed post is typically seen by just 3% to 6% of an influencer's followers. And of those followers, only 0.4% to 2% are likely to engage, with larger creators often seeing engagement rates below 1%.

Think about that for a moment.

A creator with 100,000 followers may only properly reach between 3,000 and 6,000 people organically. Of those, only a fraction will actively interact with the content.

Yet many brands across Africa continue to select influencers, allocate budgets and evaluate campaign success based primarily on follower counts, reach and engagement metrics.

The maths simply doesn't support the investment as the influencer industry has evolved.

The most progressive brands are no longer asking "How many followers does this creator have?". They're asking "How many customers can this content help us acquire?"

And that's the fundamental shift from vanity metrics to performance marketing.

The Old Model: Buying Reach

Historically, influencer marketing was treated much like traditional media buying.

Brands looked for creators with the largest possible audiences and success was measured through:

  • Reach
  • Impressions
  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Video views

These metrics certainly have a role.

  • Awareness matters.
  • Brand visibility matters.
  • Cultural relevance matters.

But none of these metrics tell you whether someone actually took action.

  • Did they visit your website?
  • Did they install your app?
  • Did they sign up?
  • Did they purchase?

For brands under increasing pressure to demonstrate marketing ROI, awareness alone is no longer enough.

The Follower Myth

One of the biggest misconceptions in influencer marketing is that a creator's follower count represents the audience a brand can access.

It doesn't.

Social platforms are no longer designed to distribute content equally across an audience.

Every major social platform uses sophisticated algorithms to decide which content appears in users' feeds.

That means creators don't truly "own" access to all of their followers.

The reality is that brands are often paying for access to an audience that never even sees the content.

This is why campaigns built solely around influencer reach frequently struggle to demonstrate business results.

The audience exists. The distribution doesn't.

Influence Without Amplification Has Limits

Creator content remains one of the most effective forms of digital communication available.

People trust people more than they trust brands.

Consumers want opinions.

They want demonstrations.

They want recommendations from individuals they follow and relate to.

That's not changing.

What's changing is how smart brands use that content.

If creator content only relies on organic distribution, its impact becomes constrained by platform algorithms.

Even exceptional content can disappear within 24 to 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the brand has invested heavily in strategy, creator fees, production and approvals.

The content itself is valuable. The distribution model is outdated.

The New Model: Organic+Performance

At Expressions, we have proven that influencer marketing should operate as an integrated system, not a one-off activation.

The most effective campaigns combine:

Authentic Creator Influence

Creators produce content in their own voice that resonates with their communities.

Performance Media Amplification

The strongest content is then amplified through paid media to highly specific audiences beyond the creator's followers.

Instead of relying on a creator with 100,000 followers to generate scale organically, brands can use performance media to distribute that content to:

  • High-intent buyers
  • Category shoppers
  • Lookalike audiences
  • Previous website visitors
  • Cart abandoners
  • Existing customers
  • Prospect audiences

The content remains creator-led and authentic. The distribution becomes strategic and measurable.

From Reach to Revenue

The biggest change in influencer marketing isn't the creators. It's the measurement framework.

Traditional influencer campaigns often stop at awareness metrics. Performance-led creator campaigns go much further and with this, we measure:

Awareness Metrics

Consideration Metrics

  • Click-through rates
  • Website visits
  • Landing page engagement
  • Content consumption

Conversion Metrics

  • Leads generated
  • App installs
  • Product purchases
  • Cost per acquisition
  • Return on ad spend
  • Revenue generated

The question changes from "Did people see it?" to "Did people do something because they saw it?" That distinction changes everything.

Why African Brands Need to Embrace This Shift

Across many African markets, influencer marketing is still largely viewed as a PR or awareness channel.

Yet consumer behaviour across the continent is becoming increasingly digital.

  • Consumers discover products online.
  • Research products online.
  • Compare products online.

And increasingly online purchases will play more and more of a role.

As this behaviour evolves, brands need influencer campaigns that can be tracked, optimised and measured against business outcomes.

The organisations that continue investing in vanity metrics will struggle to justify budgets.

The organisations that connect creator content to measurable commercial impact will gain a significant competitive advantage.

Stop Choosing Influencers. Start Choosing Performance Content

The future of influencer marketing is not about finding bigger influencers. It's about identifying better-performing content.

The winning creator is not necessarily the one with the largest audience. It's the one whose content drives action.

The winning campaign is not the one that generates the most likes. It's the one that generates the most business impact.

And the winning brands will be those that combine creator authenticity with intelligent performance distribution.

The Future of Influence in Africa

Influencer marketing is not disappearing. It's maturing.

Creators will remain essential because trust remains essential.

But the industry is moving beyond a world where success is measured by follower counts and engagement screenshots.

The future belongs to brands that understand a simple truth:

  1.        Reach is what people see.
  2.        Performance is what people do.

And in today's marketing environment, what people do matters far more than what they see.

Ready to move beyond vanity metrics?

At Expressions, we combine creator influence

with performance media to help brands scale authentic content, reach the right audiences, and drive measurable business results across Africa.

Let's build influencer campaigns that don't just generate attention, but generate growth.
